Light, Airy & Functional Screening for Rotorua Airport

Functional and beautiful security screening

In 2019, Rotorua Airport recorded its highest passenger numbers through in a decade. It was time for a redevelopment of the terminal to future-proof and cater for significant growth in the coming years.

Chief executive Mark Gibb says “While our redevelopment was driven by the need to meet demand and regulations, it was also an opportunity to create a facility that our community can be proud of—one which welcomes and farewells passengers with the manaakitanga (hospitality) Rotorua was built on”.

Kaynemaile worked with Tim Mein Architects to provide screening between the landside and airside areas of the domestic airport terminal.

As Kaynemaile Architectural mesh is lightweight, the single-piece screens could be installed without the need for significant secondary framing or having joins and gaps in the screen—which can be visually distracting.

Functionally, the Water Clear coloured mesh screens form a visual and secure barrier without the need for a rigid partition system or full height interior glazing—cutting costs for the developer.

The flexibility of Kaynemaile mesh also allows for easy repositioning of air-conditioning ducts through the screen without significant remedial work on site during installation.

High airflow through the screens are possible due to the 3-dimensional structure of Kaynemaile mesh with the Water Clear colourway used to increase light transfer creating an open, airy space.
